Chongqing currently owns 39 national intangible cultural heritage (ICH) projects, 278 municipal ICH projects and 1,714 district and county-level ICH projects as well as 32 national inheritors, 325 municipal inheritors and 1,276 district and county-level inheritors. In recent years, Chongqing has taken five steps to reinforce ICH protection, particularly including organization, legislation, funding, infrastructure and publicity.
It establishes an interdepartmental joint conference system and an ICH research institute. Among all the 38 districts and counties in Chongqing, the majority have specific working agencies.
The Intangible Cultural Heritage Law is fully implemented and the Provision on Intangible Cultural Heritage of Chongqing is under formulation.
Since 2005, Chongqing has secured 19.33 million yuan from the central government, 28.93 million yuan and 100 million yuan from district and county governments respectively, ensuring enough funding for IHC undertakings.
The city has built a protection center and a research base, and is planning an ICH museum park. Districts and counties have established one ICH museum, three folk-custom museums, four teaching and learning centers and two exhibition halls.
It conducts an ICH publicity activity lasting for a whole month and opens columns in Chongqing Daily and Chongqing TV to publicize ICH protection so as to increase public awareness in this regard. [Chinese version is available on mzb.com.cn]
